Sparta Rotterdam's Emegha Targets Another Nigerian Record Held By Kanu After Missing Out On One
Published: September 14, 2020
Promising center forward Emanuel Emegha has made his competitive debut for Sparta Rotterdam,a reward for his impressive performance during the pre-season, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
In a tactical substitution, Emegha replaced Deroy Duarte for the start of the second half as Sparta Rotterdam lost 1-0 to Ajax Amsterdam in their season opener on Sunday, September 13.
Dutch-born Emegha was aged 17 years, 7 months and 10 days when he made his maiden appearance in the Eredivisie and failed to surpass a record held by Ajax Amsterdam hero Nwankwo Kanu.
Kanu debuted in the Dutch top-flight against FC Utrecht on February 20, 1994, aged 17 years, 6 months and 19 days, making him the youngest Nigerian-born player to feature in the division.
There is another record held by Kanu that is within reach for the Sparta Rotterdam number 21 - being the youngest Nigeria-eligible player to score in the Eredivsie.
Kanu scored his first goal in the Eredivsie aged 17 years, 7 months and 23 days, a record that would be broken by Emegha if he scores against Vitesse on Saturday.
