Chelsea Product Of Nigerian Descent Akpan Trying His Luck At Football League Club
Published: December 03, 2020
Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Chelsea Academy product Ashley Akpan is training with English Football League club Sunderland with a view to signing a contract.
The 2004-born defender has been searching for a new team following his release by Chelsea, who passed up the opportunity to offer him a scholarship for the 2020-2021 season.
Sunderland youth team coaches ran the rule over Akpan during Saturday's 5-0 loss to Manchester City in an U18 Premier League North fixture, a game in which Tai Sodje stole the show with a brace and assist.
The 16-year-old started and was in action for around an hour before he was substituted in the heavy defeat to City.
Prior to his release by Chelsea, he was on the books of the Stamford Bridge outfit for six years.
Born in Warsaw to a Nigerian father and Polish mom, Akpan is eligible to represent Nigeria, Poland and England at international level.
Sunderland U18s have not started the season well with only one point from their first seven games in the U18 Premier League.
