Shoretire Sets New Man Utd Record After Debut; Overall EPL Record Held By Saka
Published: February 23, 2021
Versatile Manchester United winger Shola Shoretire set a new club record when he stepped out on to the Old Trafford turf for his Premier League debut against Newcastle United on Sunday night.
The official website of the Red Devils has confirmed that Shoretire's number 74 is the highest squad number ever won by a Manchester United player in a competitive men's first-team fixture, as he has overtaken another Academy debutant.
The previous record belonged to Teden Mengi, who made his first team debut against LASK last August sporting the number 71 kit.
One-time Nigeria Football Federation target Bukayo Saka holds the overall Premier League record, having made his top-flight debut wearing the number 87 at the back of his jersey on January 1, 2019.
The Hale End Academy product replaced another academy product in Alex Iwobi after 82 minutes as Arsenal recorded a 4-1 win over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium in London.
Shoretire, the youngest player to represent United in the UEFA Youth League, is in contention to set another new club record on Thursday, February 25.
The 17-year-old would be the youngest player to feature for Manchester
United in European competition if he is involved against Real Sociedad, overtaking the
great Norman Whiteside.
