Super Eagles target makes cameo as Southampton reach Emirates FA Cup semi-final
Published: March 20, 2021
Super Eagles target Nathan Tella is still awaiting his first senior goal after failing to get a scoresheet for Southampton as they thrashed Bournemouth 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium to advance to the last four of the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.
While Philip Billing and Dominic Solanke started for the Cherries, Tella entered the game as a substitute in the 85th minute, replacing Moussa Djenepo.
It was a fairly comfortable progression for Southampton, Djenepo opened the scoring in the 37th minute before Nathan Redmond scored perhaps the key goal of the match in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, which took the winds out of Bournemouth's sails.
Redmond converted from the rebound after Stuart Armstrong struck the post to give Southampton a 3-0 lead in the 59th minute.
In what has been a breakout season for Tella, the former Arsenal schoolboy has recorded fourteen appearances for Southampton's first team, and has been involved in the last six matches played by the club in the Premier League.
His only goal involvement came in the FA Cup fifth round win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he set up Armstrong's goal late in the game.
