Super Eagles defender Ajayi shines as West Brom register shock 5-2 win against Chelsea
Published: April 03, 2021Semi Ajayi returned to West Brom's starting lineup as they registered a shock 5-2 win over Chelsea in a Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
The Nigeria international had missed the last four games contested by the Baggies, one as a result of suspension following the red card he was shown vs Burnley, but came in for Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher, who was ineligible to face his parent club.
Chelsea were in real trouble at the break as they found themselves a goal and a man down after Thiago Silva was sent off for a second bookable offense and Matheus Pereira netted two quickfire goals.
The Blues initially took the lead through Christian Pulisic in the 27th minute, the American tapping in from close range after Marcos Alonso's free-kick rebounded off the post.
In the 54th minute, Ajayi was in the right place to maintain West Brom's lead when he poked Alonso's effort on to the post and out for a corner.
Callum Robinson's brace and Mbaye Diagne's effort secured the Baggies a historic first-ever Premier League win at Stamford Bridge, while Mason Mount pulled a goal back for the London team in the second half.
Following their fourth win of the season, West Brom are now seven points from safety before their next Premier League match versus Southampton.
