Zidane omits Nigerian midfielder from Real Madrid's matchday squad versus Liverpool
Published: April 05, 2021
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has announced his squad for Tuesday evening's Champions League meeting against Liverpool at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium.
The French coach has omitted Nigeria-eligible midfielder Marvin Akinlabi from the 21-man squad and all the players included on the roster are set to be named in the matchday squad barring an injury in the pre-match warm-up.
Akinlabi has been registered by Real Madrid for the Champions League knockout rounds via the List B, consisting of players under 21 years old that have spent at least three seasons at the club.
The 20-year-old was making inroads into Los Blancos first team until he suffered an injury on his full La Liga debut against Getafe on February 9.
He has impressed for Real Madrid Castilla since recovering from injury just before the international break, opening his account for the season against UD Sanse (March 31), before providing an assist in his next game vs Extremadura UD (April 4).
Akinlabi entered into the history books as the first Nigeria-eligible player in history to play competitively for Real Madrid when he made his La Liga debut against Real Sociedad on September 20, 2020.
