Union Berlin schedule transfer talks with Liverpool over permanent signing of Awoniyi
Published: April 26, 2021German Bundesliga club Union Berlin will hold transfer talks with Liverpool over the permanent acquisition of Taiwo Awoniyi.
The 2013 U17 World Cup winner has been loaned out by the Reds to six different clubs, namely FSV Frankfurt, NEC, Royal Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent, Mainz and Union Berlin, since his arrival at Anfield in 2015 due to a work permit obstacle.
According to Berlin-based newspaper BZ, Union Berlin are interested in signing Awoniyi on a permanent basis, but final talks with Liverpool FC will probably only take place after the season.
The former Nigeria U23 international impressed for the Berliners prior to his spell on the sidelines, scoring 5 goals and assisting three others in 19 Bundesliga appearances.
The striker was in contention to earn his first Super Eagles call-up for their AFCON qualifiers last month, but manager Gernot Rohr excluded him from his plans after he failed to recover from his injury.
Now there is light at the end of the tunnel, with Awoniyi set to resume full training in the coming days and may be in the matchday squad against Wolfsburg on May 8.
The 23-year-old's contract with Liverpool is due to expire in the summer of 2023.
