Villarreal winger Chukwueze operated by surgeon dubbed 'the Messi of Medicine'
Published: May 31, 2021Europa League winners Villarreal have confirmed through their official website that Samuel Chukwueze has undergone surgery on his quadriceps in his left leg at the Hospital Quirónsalud in Barcelona.
The operation was carried out by famous surgeon Doctor Ramón Cugat, who has been dubbed the 'Messi of Medicine'.
Cugat has treated other Nigeria-eligible players such as Watford's Isaac Success and Udinese striker Stefano Okaka in the past.
A personal friend of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Cugat has operated on Xavi, Samuel Eto'o, Carles Puyol, Luis Enrique, Gabriel Milito, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.
Chukwueze has been on the sidelines since suffering a muscle damage to the rectus anterior of his left leg during the first half of the goalless draw against Arsenal in the semifinals of the Europa League on May 6.
The Nigeria international did everything possible to get fit for the game against Manchester United but suffered a relapse in the days leading up to the final in Gdansk, Poland.
Villarreal have not disclosed a timetable for Chukwueze's return to action, however, the winger is now rated as doubtful for Nigeria's World Cup qualifiers in September.
The 2015 U17 World Cup winner directly participated in 13 goals (5 goals, 8 assists) in 40 matches for Villarreal in the 2020-2021 season.
