Austria move a step closer to beating Nigeria to former Super Eagles invitee Lawal
The Austrian Football Association have moved a step closer to beating their Nigerian counterparts to the services of promising goalkeeper Tobias Lawal, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.

On Friday night, about the same time the Super Eagles were facing Cameroon, Lawal made his debut for Austria U21s as they registered a 2-1 win over Slovakia in an international friendly at Sonnenseestadion.

He was one of two players of Nigerian descent picked in the starting lineup by manager Werner Gregoritsch, the other being Kano-born Red Bull Salzburg loanee Chukwubuike Adamu.

Lawal's other appearances for Austria's youth teams were in friendly matches, against Switzerland U20s and Denmark U19s.

The LASK rising star is a player of interest to manager Gernot Rohr but has yet to make his debut for the Super Eagles because he has issues procuring a Nigerian passport.

He was in the Super Eagles camp last October to familiarize himself with the national team players before they faced Algeria and Tunisia in friendly matches.

Born in Linz, Austria, Lawal would have to renounce his Austrian passport if he was to become a Nigeria international, something that appears not to be an option for him for the time being.

Two players of Nigerian descent, Bayern Munich's David Alaba and Mainz's Karim Onisiwo, have been included in Austria's squad for the upcoming European Championship.
