Racing Genk striker Paul Onuachu is the bookies favourite to win the Ebony Shoe for 2021, awarded to the best player of African origin in the Belgian First Division A, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Nigeria international will find out if he has won the Ebony Shoe at an award ceremony on Monday, June 7.
The other nominees for the prestigious award are Racing Genk winger of Congolese descent Théo Bongonda, Anderlecht duo Albert Sambi Lokonga and Lukas Nmecha who are of Congolese and Nigerian descent respectively and Club Brugge's Angola right-back Clinton Mata.
In the recently concluded season, Onuachu mustered 33 goals in 38 league games and netted twice in the Belgian Cup.
His standout performance last season came in Genk's 4-1 win at KAS Eupen, where he netted his first and only hat-trick since moving to Belgium in 2019.
The former FC Midtjylland man helped the Limburg side qualify for next season's Champions League and win the Belgian Cup.
Should Onuachu win the Ebony Shoe, he will follow in the footsteps of Daniel Amokachi (Club Brugge), Victor Ikpeba (RFC Liége), Godwin Okpara and Celestine Babayaro (Anderlecht) - previous Nigerian winners of the award.
Onuachu is considered as the front-runner to grab the award because he won the Player of the Year and Golden Boot awards at the Belgian Pro League awards last month.
