Man City fend off interest in Nigerian by promoting striker to U23 team for next season
Published: June 15, 2021Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that Premier League champions Manchester City have fended off interest for Tai Sodje by promoting the talented Nigerian striker to their U23 team for the 2021-2022 season.
An unnamed Championship club made an approach to sign Tai, the nephew of former Nigeria internationals Sam and Efe Sodje, but their advances were rebuffed.
It was only a matter of time before Sodje became a subject of interest after an impressive debut season in the U18 Premier League.
The 17-year-old was Manchester City's top scorer in the division with nineteen goals in 22 matches, bettered only by Manchester United's Charlie McNeill (24), Fulham's Mika Biereth and David Omilabu (21 goals).
Sodje's goals helped the Citizens win the U18 Premier League northern section title in 2020-2021.
Should he impress next season for the U23s, a professional debut may be on the cards with City competing on four fronts - Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League.
Described as a striker in the mould of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Sodje has been on the books of Manchester City since 2015.
