Charlton manager to include 17-year-old Anglo-Nigerian in traveling squad for Celtic friendly
Published: July 07, 2021
English League One club Charlton Athletic have started preparations ahead of the 2021-2022 season.
The Addicks pre-season campaign will kickoff with a glamour friendly against Scottish Premiership giants Glasgow Celtic on Saturday, July 10.
Promising Nigeria-eligible center back Deji Elerewe has been promoted to first-team training by manager Nigel Adkins.
Having impressed Adkins in the few training sessions at Sparrows Lane, the manager has included the Anglo-Nigerian youngster in the traveling squad to Wales, where they are holding a training camp at Celtic Manor golf resort in Newport, allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report.
It would be Elerewe's unofficial debut for Charlton Athletic's first team if he is given a run-out against Celtic this weekend.
The 17-year-old, who will enter the second year of his scholarship in the new season, trained with the first team last term - a testament to how highly he's rated by the coaching staff.
Elerewe was a key member of the Addicks squad that won the Professional
Development League North title in 2020-2021, conceding the least number
of goals in the division, and went the distance in the loss to Wigan Athletic U18s in the playoff final.
