Manchester United's Nigeria-eligible striker in contention to face Derby County
Published: July 17, 2021
Manchester United striker of Nigerian descent Shola Shoretire is in contention to suit up for the Red Devils when they tackle Derby County in their first pre-season game at Pride Park on Sunday.
The England youth international, predominantly an U23 player, has been training with Manchester United first team since the start of pre-season activities.
Manchester United have informed via their official website that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to name a youthful squad against the Rams, with the likes of Matej Kovar, Shola Shoretire, Dylan Levitt, Anthony Elanga and Hannibal hoping for an opportunity.
Shoretire, United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for 2020-21, was on the fringes of the first team last season, making three appearances in total including debuts in the Premier League and Europa League.
Aged 17, he was the club's top scorer in the Premier League 2 with ten goals in twenty-one appearances while producing five assists, and was nominated for the PL2 Player of the Season award.
Meanwhile, out-of-favour Nigeria international Sone Aluko was pictured training with Derby County on Friday and it remains to be seen whether or not he will be involved against Manchester United.
The winger is out of contract at the moment following his release by Reading at the end of last month.
