Liverpool's ex-Flying Eagles star set to become Union Berlin's most expensive signing in history
Published: July 20, 2021German Bundesliga club Union Berlin are on the verge of confirming the signing of former Nigeria U20 international Taiwo Awoniyi.
According to multiple press reports in the German and English press, including Goal.com, Liverpool striker Awoniyi is set to join Union Berlin in a £6.5million (€7.5m/$9m) deal.
If the transfer is finalized, the 2013 U17 World Cup winner would become the most expensive acquisition in the history of Union Berlin, costing £3.35million more than Poland international left-back Tymoteusz Puchacz.
Nigeria international Anthony Ujah is currently the second most expensive signing made by Union Berlin after joining the capital club for a fee of £1.8million in 2019.
Awoniyi, who had been training with Liverpool first team at their training camp in Austria, is supposed to complete a medical examination on Tuesday, July 20 ahead of his unveiling by Union Berlin.
The 23-year-old has agreed a five-year contract with Die Eisernen and Liverpool have included a ten percent sell-on clause into the deal.
Signed from Imperial Soccer Academy in 2015, Awoniyi was unable to secure a work permit until this summer, leading to loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent and Mainz, before joining Union Berlin last summer.
