'Can become the new Drogba' - Rohr full of praise for Napoli no. 9 after brace vs Leicester
Published: September 18, 2021
Nigeria manager Gernot Rohr was full of praise for Victor Osimhen after the Napoli striker opened his account for the season with a brace against Leicester City in a Europa League group stage encounter at the King Power Stadium on Thursday night.
Napoli had a mountain to climb after finding themselves two goals down against the Foxes but Osimhen halved the deficit in the 69th minute before rising highest to nod in the equaliser with three minutes left on the clock.
The German football tactician has likened Osimhen to Ivory Coast and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba and defended the 70million euros transfer fee Napoli paid Lille for the signature of the attacker in the summer of 2020.
The Ultimate Strikers product is known for his goalscoring exploits, winning the top scorer award at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup after netting 10 goals and also hit double figures in the past three seasons at Sporting Charleroi, Lille and Napoli.
"Victor is currently one of the best strikers in Europe, but not yet in the world. Osimhen is young, ambitious and very motivated," Rohr said to Tuttomercatoweb.com.
"I think he has what it takes to become a great striker, one of the best ever. But he still has to grow."
Asked to name a great center forward Osimhen reminds him of, Rohr replied : "Osimhen can become the new Drogba, I have no doubts about this.
"Victor has many qualities that recall those of the Ivorian legend Didier, we hope he can retrace his steps at club and national level".
On Osimhen being Napoli's record signing, Rohr stated : "A striker who scores many goals is always expensive, we all know the transfer market. for Drogba and many others ".
Osimhen has directly participated in thirteen goals (7 goals, 6 assists) in his last ten matches for the Super Eagles.
