GvB watches two Super Eagles stars from the stands in Rangers' shock loss to Hibernian
Published: November 21, 2021New Glasgow Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst watched two Super Eagles stars from the stands as the Light Blues suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Hibernian in the semifinal of the Premier Sports Cup on Sunday evening at the National Stadium.
The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder is awaiting a work permit before officially starting work at Rangers.
In a 4-3-3 formation, Leon Balogun started in central defence and international teammate Joe Aribo was part of a three-man attack, while Calvin Bassey came on to replace the Super Eagles center-back with ten minutes remaining.
It was not an ideal start for the Scottish champions as they fell behind in the ninth minute when Martin Boyle tapped home at the back post to break the deadlock.
It was dreadful defending by Balogun and his defensive partners as none of them came to attack the ball in the box.
Boyle's angled strike made it 2-0 at minute 21 and the Hibernian number 10 bagged his hat-trick from the spot seven minutes to the end of the half.
Scott Arfield pulled a goal back with an angled finish into the top corner in the 40th minute.
Despite Rangers searching for a crucial goal, Aribo departed the pitch in the 69th minute to be replaced by Ryan Jack.
