How Super Eagles lined up in 2-0 win vs Coton Sport in practice game; Musa, Chukwueze score
Published: January 07, 2022
The Super Eagles stepped up their preparations for their opening game of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over 15-time Cameroonian champions Coton Sport FC de Garoua in a practice match on Friday.
Interim Nigeria boss Augustine Eguavoen used two different starting lineups, one in each half, during the friendly with the strongest-looking XI starting the first half.
There were two big surprises in the teams fielded by Eguavoen, with Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi, who were guaranteed starters under former coach Gernot Rohr, starting on the bench.
Maduka Okoye started in goal and the back four contained Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Zaidu Sanusi.
Wilfred Ndidi and Joe Aribo started as the holding midfielders with Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidera Ejuke and Ahmed Musa in front of them, while Taiwo Awoniyi led the line.
Coach Eguavoen was taking notes as the game went on and made his first substitution when Musa, who broke the deadlock, was replaced by Iwobi.
The Everton star and Porto fullback retained their places for the start of the second half as others gave way.
The Super Eagles starting lineup for the second half is as follows : Francis Uzoho, Olisa Ndah, Semi Ajayi, Chidozie Awaziem, Zaidu, Frank Onyeka, Kelechi Nwakali, Iwobi, Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Sadiq Umar.
With the Super Eagles still 1-0 up, Onyekuru entered the game as a substitute to replace Iwobi.
Nigeria doubled their advantage through Chukwueze after a great run by Simon to set him up, and shortly after the goal Sadiq was taken off for Peter Olayinka.
The three-time African champions will have a Nigeria vs Nigeria in-house game before their opener against the Pharaohs.
Super Eagles first half : Okoye, Aina, Omeruo, Troost-Ekong, Sanusi, Ndidi, Aribo, Iheanacho, Ejuke, Musa (Iwobi), Awoniyi
Super Eagles second half : Uzoho, Ndah, Ajayi, Awaziem, Zaidu, Onyeka, Nwakali, Iwobi (Onyekuru), Chukwueze, Simon, Umar (Olayinka)
