Arsenal recall Anglo-Spanish-Nigerian midfielder from loan spell
Published: January 14, 2022
Arsenal have reportedly recalled Anglo-Spanish-Nigerian midfielder Miguel Azeez from his loan spell at League One club Portsmouth.
According to The News, the Gunners have recalled the England youth international halfway through his scheduled season-long loan move as they were unhappy at the lack of minutes he was given in the first half of the campaign.
Azeez made ten appearances for Pompey in total across all competitions, eight of which he started.
The 19-year-old scored his first professional goal against Crystal Palace in the group stage of the Papa John's Trophy - the only goal he netted during his loan spell at Portsmouth.
He may come in handy for Arsenal's first team manger Mikel Arteta this month with Thomas Partey (Ghana) and Mohamed Elneny (Egypt) on international duty with their countries at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
Another central midfielder in Granit Xhaka is set to miss upcoming matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool after he was sent off in the Carabao Cup semifinal clash against the Reds on Thursday.
Hale End Academy product Azeez made his senior debut for the Gunners against Dundalk in December 2020.
