Exciting Nigerian winger could have ended up at Chelsea Youth instead of Charlton Athletic
Published: January 22, 2022
Exciting teenage Nigeria-eligible winger Tolu Ladapo has revealed that he could have ended up at Chelsea before switching to the youth team of Charlton Athletic.
Chelsea had explored the possibility of signing the Anglo-Nigerian and invited him for trials but nothing came out it.
Ladapo rose through the academy ranks at the Addicks before signing a scholarship in the summer of 2020 and has now become an important player for their U18 squad.
"I joined Charlton Athletic at the start of the U15 season. I was on trial during the last stage of the U14 season and eventually got signed at the start of pre-season going into U15s," Ladapo said to allnigeriasoccer.com.
"Before joining Charlton I hadn't been signed by any other academy but I was on trial at both Chelsea and Millwall."
Ladapo has admitted his admiration for Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman and considers the Frenchman as his role model.
"One player I like to watch is Kingsley Coman. I think he is a very direct winger, every time he gets the ball he looks to take on the opposition fullback and he's very good at going past players.
"He also has a good end product and a variety of crosses for example he can drill it low on the floor, he can stand it up and he has awareness."
