Arsenal, Spurs yet to table contract offer for Ugochukwu; Rennes starlet committed to France for now
Published: April 20, 2022
Allnigeriasoccer.com can report with certainty that English Premier League clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have not yet firmed up their interest in Stade Rennais midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu, few months before the transfer window opens for business.
L'Equipe broke the news that the Gunners and their north London rivals Spurs were keeping tabs on Ugochukwu,
who is the nephew of former Super Eagles defender Onyekachi Apam, with a view to recruiting him in the summer.
But the two clubs have not made a formal approach by making contact with Rennes and tabling a contract offer for the promising 18-year-old who has been likened to Arsenal icon Patrick Vieira due to his playing style.
Ugochukwu and his minders are aware of the interest from the Premier League and German Bundesliga but theĀ youngster is focused on Rennes despite speculation surrounding his future.
Born in Rennes, the central midfielder, nephew of former Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam, is eligible to play international football for France and Nigeria, and has caps for the European giants at U18 level.
When contacted to comment on where his son's international future lies, Ugochukwu Senior told allnigeriasoccer.com : "Lesley is committed to France, this may change in future, but for now he's staying with France."
Ugochukwu signed his first professional contract with Rennes in the summer of 2020 and has totaled seventeen career appearances in the French Ligue 1 since debuting against Dijon in April 2021.
