Leyton Orient XI 4 Arsenal XI 1 : Seven players of Nigerian descent in starting lineup
Published: May 04, 2022
Seven players of Nigerian descent were named in the starting lineup as Leyton Orient XI earned a comprehensive 4-1 victory over an Arsenal XI in a friendly staged at Breyer Group Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Republic of Ireland youth international Shadrach Ogie and Harrison Sodje started for The O's, while goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri, Miguel Azeez, James Olayinka, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji and Joel Ideho started for the Gunners.
Harrison Sodje is the son of Sam Sodje's first cousin and lives with the former Nigeria international in the United Kingdom.
Ejeheri did very well in the opening minutes, making saves to deny Nkrumah and a trialist from opening the scoring.
The deadlock was broken in the nineteenth minute as a trialist scored from an acute angle, Nkrumah doubled the lead after a goalkeeping error by Ejeheri in the 39th minute, and another trialist made it 3-0 three minutes before halftime.
Azeez saw his free-kick hit the wall on the hour mark after a foul was committed by Ogie.
Any hope of a comeback was diminished when Matt Young increased the margin to four goals in the 75th minute, but Mika Biereth grabbed a consolation for the Gunners in the closing minutes.
