The reason Samuel Kalu was omitted from Watford's squad in loss to Chelsea
Published: May 22, 2022Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu was omitted from Watford's matchday squad for their final Premier League game of the season against Chelsea on Sunday evening.
Watford informed just before kickoff at Stamford Bridge that the winter signing from Bordeaux was not at the disposal of manager Roy Hodgson due to illness.
No Nigeria international was involved for Watford with Emmanuel Dennis still recovering from a knee issue, Oghenekaro Etebo suffered a training ground injury during the week and William Troost-Ekong was a non-playing substitute.
Without the quartet tasting action, Watford put up a spirited performance but eventually succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat with Ross Barkley's last-gasp header securing three points for the home team.
The visitors thought they had done enough to earn at least a point after Dan Gosling's 87th minute goal canceled out Kai Havertz’s 11th-minute strike.
Kalu waited until the penultimate home game, against Everton, before making his full debut for the Hornets and logged 221 minutes across four matches.
