Osimhen vs Nunez: Who should Liverpool have targeted between the two strikers?

Liverpool have announced the signing of Uruguay hitman Darwin Nunez for a fee in the region of 100 million euros when certain add-ons are met.

Nunez has been on the lips of almost every football fan after his outstanding performances against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.

The market for strikers is quite limited due to the modification that has been added to the position.

No longer are strikers only good in the air and scoring goals, they also need to meet all other facets of play like running the channels and pressing in order to make it in the top teams.

So having signed Nunez, would it have been better if Liverpool had targeted Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen instead?

Allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at both striker's qualities to determine who would have been the better target between both players for the Reds.

Jürgen Klopp employs a 4-3-3 Jeugo De Posición tactical set-up with a focus on counter-pressing (otherwise called gegenpressing). A striker in this set-up needs to provide the following values at the highest level.

- Finishing from crosses

- Runs in behind

- Linking play

- Pinning defenders

- Pressing

Nunez is an exceptional striker. A proper outlet who provides a clinical finishing from crosses, runs in behind, pressing and pinning defenders. A good striker is a good striker and the Uruguayan is one of those.

Nunez's profile is more similar to that of Edinson Cavani and Diego Costa. Animals on the attack but can't take the initiative when their teams aren't providing for them (although Costa does this with his fiery attitude rather than ability).

Osimhen on the other hand falls into the category of strikers known as "physical playmakers". Despite providing all other abilities that Nunez offers, the Napoli striker is good at playmaking.

He has good associative play and can bring his team up the pitch if he is finding it difficult to breach defences.

While he is not yet at their level, Osimhen has abilities that are similar and can rival that of Harry Kane and Karim Benzema's if properly refined.

Although he isn't as aesthetically pleasing on the ball as the English and French striker, he leans towards the physical side to force issues when things aren't going his way.

Other strikers in this category are Brentford's Ivan Toney, Everton's Calvert-Lewin and Tammy Abraham.

Simply put, Nunez fits a team where the whole team will be providing for him regularly while Osimhen has the ability to take the initiative when things are not going well.

Osimhen may have been a better option being that they are both valued at the same price range. Although, Nunez is also a great addition being that Liverpool has technicians all over the pitch.
