Opinion : Two English clubs that could benefit from signing Chelsea legend Mikel
Published: July 05, 2022
Many Nigerian players are being courted by other clubs as the summer transfer window race hots up. Others have already made moves while some are on the verge of sealing transfer deals elsewhere.
Chelsea and Nigeria legend Mikel Obi is a free agent as he is currently without a club following the termination of his contract by his former club, Al Kuwait SC for yet undisclosed reasons.
After a brief stint with Stoke City in the English Championship, Mikel joined Al Kuwait. He had a year left on his contract with the Kuwait club having signed a one-year contract that was supposed to keep him at the club for the 2021-22 season.
Mikel, who spent the largest part of his footballing career at London giants Chelsea where he won several laurels including the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup has been without a club ever since.
Allnigeriasoccer.com takes a look at two English clubs that could benefit from signing the Super Eagles legend.
Huddersfield Town
The Terriers failed to secure a Premier League return after losing to Nottingham Forest with a 1-0 scoreline in the playoff game which was played at Wembley Stadium.
The Terriers were outplayed in the midfield and that can be attributed to a lack of experience from some of their midfield options like Lewis O'Brien and Jon Russell.
Along with other squad preparations, adding Mikel Obi's quality and experience to that of Jonathan Hogg could be the necessary catalyst needed for another push for Premier League qualification next season.
Norwich City
The Canaries were relegated from the Premier League long before the season ended. Norwich have high-quality players in their side midfield like Todd Cantwell, however, only Isaac Hayden is of EPL quality in the central areas.
A push back to the EPL is no easy task and Mikel could do a job for the club by adding quality, depth and experience to the team.
