Wayne Rooney's DC United preparing N2.1b bid for 6ft 4in Nigerian attacker
Published: July 25, 2022Major League Soccer club D.C. United, coached by Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney, are reportedly lining up a bid for Nigerian attacker Elijah Adebayo.
Rooney returned to D.C. United earlier this month, this time as manager, after resigning as Derby County coach.
Washington Post reporter Steven Goff has tweeted that D.C. United will make a bid in excess of five million dollars (N2.1 billion in Nigerian currency) for the Luton Town star.
Wayne Rooney and D.C. United making a $5 million+ run at Elijah Adebajo, Luton Town's 6-foot-4 striker, source says. Englishman scored 17 goals in 42 matches across all competitions last season. Contract runs through 2023-24. Age: 24. #dcu #mls

Adebayo, a product of the Fulham Academy where he spent twelve years, moved to the Hatters in February 2021, and made a splash last season with 17 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions.
The 6ft 4in striker played a fringe role due to fitness issues as Luton Town were beaten by Huddersfield Town in the Championship playoff semifinals.
Should Adebayo's transfer to D.C United materialize, it would be the first time in his career he has been snapped up by a non-English club.
During his time at Craven Cottage, he embarked on loan spells at Slough Town, Bognor Regis Town, Cheltenham Town, Swindon Town and Stevenage, before sealing a permanent transfer to Walsall in the summer of 2019.
Adebayo has a contract with Luton Town until June 2024 and netted against Derby County last October with Rooney in the Rams dugout.
