'We've been playing really well' - Iwobi insists after assisting Everton win first game 2022-23
Published: September 18, 2022For the seventh time of asking, Everton have won their long-awaited first Premier League game of the 2022-2023 season, beating West Ham United 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
Summer signing from Brighton & Hove, Neal Maupay produced the goods when they were required by netting what proved to be the winning goal.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Frenchman fired a half volley into the bottom corner after he was fed by the outstanding Alex Iwobi on the edge of the box.
The Nigeria international had a chance to put the game to bed in the 87th minute but his 25-yard effort wend wide of the post.
In a 4-3-3 formation, Iwobi was partnered in midfield by Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gana Gueye but the former Arsenal man played further forward after Demarai Gray was replaced in the 81st minute.
Speaking post-match, Iwobi insisted that the Toffees have been playing well in the new season but were not getting the expected results.
Manager Frank Lampard's team lost by the odd goal to both Chelsea and Aston Villa, followed by draws against Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Leeds United and Liverpool, meaning they are now unbeaten in five straight games in the division.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Iwobi stated : "We have been playing really well. The performances were good, it was just about getting the result. It's good to get a win going into the international break.
"I didn’t get off to a great start . I always have the mindset to prove people wrong. The manager allows me to express myself."
Iwobi has been named in the latest Nigeria squad and has been instructed to report for international duty in Algeria on Monday, September 19.
