2,145 days without a win v Algeria : Fennec Foxes star admits Super Eagles are seeking revenge
Published: September 27, 2022Wydad Casablanca's Algeria midfielder Houcine Benayada has admitted that the Super Eagles are seeking revenge in Tuesday evening's international friendly at the Miloud Hadefi Olympic Complex.
Including the 2018 World Cup qualifying match at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui, Constantine in November 2017, which was forfeited in Algeria's favour due to manager Gernot Rohr fielding an ineligible player, the Super Eagles have lost three games on the bounce against the North African powerhouse.
The Super Eagles suffered a last-gasp 2-1 defeat in the semifinals of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and the following year lost 1-0 in an friendly staged in Austria.
Benayada has suggested that the two defeats give an extra motivation to the Super Eagles players heading into this evening's match.
Speaking in the mixed zone at the end of training on Monday, Benayada told reporters : "We are going to face a very good team from Nigeria, even if we also had enormous difficulties to overcome the Guinean selection which caused us a lot of problems during the previous match.
“We know that the players of Nigeria will face us with a spirit of revenge since we remain on two victories against them, but our objective will be to claim a new victory while making a better performance compared to the previous match”.
2,145 days have passed since Nigeria last defeated Algeria in an international match and it was in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo on November 12, 2016.
Two goals from Victor Moses and Obi Mikel's strike helped Nigeria secure a 3-1 win, while Nabil Bentaleb, who could face the Super Eagles again today, scored a consolation for the North Africans.
