Transfer guru Romano reveals Man Utd prioritized the signing of Antony over Super Eagles striker

Celebrated Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Manchester United prioritized the signing of Antony over Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian winger became United's second most expensive acquisition in history when he completed his move from Ajax Amsterdam on transfer deadline day, signing a contract until 2027, with the option of an additional year.

Cristiano Ronaldo was pushing for a move away from Old Trafford in the summer in order to play Champions League football and there was speculation that the Red Devils would make a move for Napoli striker Osimhen in a swap deal that would see their Portuguese icon head in the opposite direction.

There are fresh rumours that Osimhen could be leaving Napoli for Manchester United when the transfer market reopens for business in January but Romano has suggested that the deal would not happen.

Writing in his column for Caughtoffside (subscription required) on September 28,  Romano said : "I’ve seen many rumours about Napoli striker Victor Osimhen - a very good striker, a very important player.

"My understanding is the only chance to sign him was towards the end of the summer, but they decided to go for Antony as their priority.

"At the moment, Napoli have absolutely no intention to sell Osimhen in January. They’re having an amazing season and Osimhen is a big part of that.

"They’ve always said it would take more than €100m, so it won’t be easy in January to tempt Napoli into a sale."

Osimhen has approximately three years left on his contract with Napoli, whom he joined from Lille for a club-record fee in the region of 70 million euros.
