Everton 1 Man Utd 2 : Iwobi fires Blues ahead but Ronaldo's 700th club goal seals win
Published: October 09, 2022Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi scored first Premier League goal for Everton this season in their 2-1 home defeat against Manchester United at Goodison Park on Sunday.
The goal was only the fifth for the Nigerian in 92 league appearances for the club he joined from Arsenal.
Iwobi had his uncle and Bolton Wanderers legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha watching him from the executive box.
The Everton number 17 curled home the ball beautifully to the top right corner in the 5th minute but Brazil forward Antony equalised for the Red Devils moments later when Anthony Martial teed him up ten minutes after the match's first goal .
Former Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro went close to opening his goal account for United with a flying header in the opposition box but his effort went off the target.
Frenchman Anthony Martial was replaced before the halftime by Cristiano Ronaldo and the Portuguese made his mark by scoring his 700th club goal in the 44th minute after he raced onto a through pass from Casemiro who intercepted Alex Iwobi’s attempted pass.
Iwobi created a couple of goal scoring chances, the highlight being the 62nd minute cross into the United penalty box that drew the applause of Everton supporters.
Everton fought hard to equalize while Marcus Rashford had a goal disallowed for handling the ball enroute goal.
United rose to 5th spot with 15 points while Everton are 12th on 10 points.
