Scott McTominay, David de Gea, Neil Lennon hail magnificent Nigeria GK Uzoho
Published: October 13, 2022Omonia Nicosia were approximately 180 seconds away from securing the best result in their history but eventually conceded a very late goal to lose 1-0 to Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The goal from Scott McTominay in the third minute of stoppage time broke the hearts of Omonia and Super Eagles fans who are not Manchester United supporters.
Omonia Nicosia's Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho made astonishing saves, especially in the 22nd minute when he denied Marcus Rashford, in the 46th minute when he blocked Antony's shot and stopped Rashford's follow-up.
With twenty minutes left on the clock, Ronaldo was unsuccessful in his attempt to beat Uzoho at the near post and the Super Eagles star was called into action again in the 83rd minute when he stopped a shot from McTominay.
In their post match reactions, McTominay, goalkeeper David de Gea and Omonia's British manager Neil Lennon were full of superlatives for Uzoho.
McTominay told BT Sport : "You have to be patient, we had so many chances, their goalkeeper was different class but we created enough in the end to score."
David de Gea added : "Their keeper was great today, he made a lot of saves, we played a great game and in the end we had the great goal from Scotty and the three points."
Lennon said : "My goalkeeper was incredible. I'm really proud of the team but at this level we need to keep the ball better than we did in the final third."
Uzoho has been nominated for the Europa League Player of the Week following his outstanding performance against Manchester United and will have to see off competition from Vitor Oliveira (Sporting Braga), Joey Veerman (PSV) and William Bøving (SK Sturm Graz) to win the accolade.
