Talented winger of Nigerian descent makes development squad debut for Chelsea
Published: November 23, 2022
England youth international of Nigerian descent Tudor Mendel-Idowu made his debut for Chelsea's development squad on Tuesday in their 4-2 hammering of Peterborough United in a Papa Johns Trophy clash staged at Weston Homes Stadium.
The talented winger entered the game as a substitute in the 87th minute, replacing Leo Castledine for his first competitive appearance for the Blues U21 side.
Prior to his U21 debut, Mendel-Idowu figured for Chelsea in the U18 Premier League, U18 Premier League Cup, FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League.
Aged 17, he started the second year of his scholarship with Chelsea at the start of the 2022-2023 campaign.
Chelsea progressed to the next round of the Papa Johns Trophy thanks to a brace from Malik Mothersille, and excellent strikes from Cesare Casadei and Ben Elliott, while Clarke-Harris and Jack Taylor were on the scoresheet for the League One side.
German-born Nigerian fullback Derrick Abu was named in Chelsea's matchday squad for the trip to Peterborough United but was an unused substitute.
