Chelsea boss Potter provides fitness update on Super Eagles-eligible player
Published: December 12, 2022Manager Graham Potter provided a fitness update on Super Eagles-eligible midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka after Chelsea's 1-0 loss to Aston Villa in a mid-season friendly held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Sunday.
The England U20 international was one of seven players omitted from the matchday squad against Aston Villa despite being spotted training with the team prior to the friendly.
Potter has suggested that Chukwuemeka was not selected for the inaugural CBF | Al Wahda Challenge Cup against his former club Aston Villa because he wasn't yet in tiptop condition.
The 19-year-old has stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury and will be hoping to build up his fitness when the squad resume training at Cobham early next week.
Speaking to Chelsea's official website post-match, Potter said : "We’ve got a full week’s training when we get back and then we have a friendly the following week so that will be good. There’s a few more guys coming back from the World Cup so it’s moving nicely.
"We’ll be able to have a few more players back in full training with us. Reece James has moved forward, Wesley Fofana is moving forward, Carney Chukwuemeka is moving forward so that’s positive."
Chukwuemeka has not played competitively for Chelsea since coming off the bench for the last eleven minutes in the Premier League game against Manchester United on October 22, 2022.
Chelsea have arranged a friendly next week to prepare the team for the visit of Bournemouth to Stamford Bridge on December 27.
