Why Racing Genk's Super Eagles striker Onuachu will be a good option for Liverpool
Published: December 17, 2022Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has divided opinions with his playing style and adaptability in terms of his international career.
At his Belgian club, Genk this season he has scored 14 league goals in 15 matches.
Last season 2021/2022, he notched up 21 goals in 35 league appearances while in the 2020/2021 season he grabbed 33 goals in 38 matches.
For Nigeria, Onuachu has scored three goals in 18 appearances since his debut in 2019 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Seychelles.
Onuachu has not been every Nigerian supporters' favourite player as his languid style has not translated to several goals from the wings as it should be since the 'traditional' Nigerian tactic is to attack opponents from the wings.
However with transfer rumours previously linking him to an English Premier League club, it will be a fascinating to see if he can thrive in such a highly demanding league.
Perhaps Onuachu could be the new Divock Origi and succeed at a club like Liverpool where he will play second fiddle to Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Darwin Núñez.
The luxury of a first team place might be at a premium but playing in a team where the full backs, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson are among the best in the world delivering great crosses could be what the beanpole striker needs to become the striker everyone hopes that he will become.
