Published: January 10, 2023
For the fourth straight season, at least one teenager of Nigerian descent will be among the new intake of academy scholars at Chelsea.
Allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report that talented Golden Eaglets-eligible defender Saheed Olagunju has agreed a scholarship with The Blues ahead of the 2023-2024 campaign.
And he in doing so, he is set to follow in the footsteps of Derrick Abu, Kelechi Chibueze and Prince Adegoke who signed scholarship deals for the 2020-2021 season.
The following season, Louis Flower, Richard Olise and Tudor Mendel-Idowu signed scholarship agreements, while Somto Boniface and Chinonso Chibueze were introduced as new scholars for the 2022-2023 campaign.
Olagunju will be fully promoted to Chelsea's U18 team next season after agreeing a two-year scholarship.
The promising defender has already experienced U18s football while still a schoolboy, making his competitive debut in the U18 Premier League in Chelsea's 2-1 win over West Brom back in October.
Saheed comes from a footballing family, he is the younger brother of Huddersfield Town academy product Mustapha Olagunju who made his professional debut for the Terriers as a teenager.
