Published: January 15, 2023
Ademola Lookman proved why he is one of the top marksmen in the Italian Serie A with a brace and an assist for Atalanta in their club record 8-2 win over Salernitana at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Sunday evening.
After Boulaye Dia scored to cancel out Jérémie Boga's early opener, Lookman restored the Nerazzurri lead when he converted a spot kick in the 20th minute despite the goalkeeper's best efforts to keep the ball out.
Atalanta put the game to bed at halftime as they were leading 5-1 courtesy of goals from Giorgio Scalvini, Teun Koopmeiners and Rasmus Højlund.
Things got worse and worse for Salernitana as Lookman slammed home a shot from the edge of the penalty area to make it 6-1.in the 54th minute, but Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, with his first Serie A, scored to reduce the deficit two minutes later.
Éderson scored a sensational goal in the 61st minute after he was picked out by Lookman and Nadir Zortea added further gloss to the scoreline with the final goal of the game in the 85th minute.
According to OPTA, Atalanta scored eight goals for the first time in their history in Serie A and the last team that managed to score eight goals in the Serie A was Inter Milan on April 14, 1996 against Padova.
Since October 2022, only Napoli striker Victor Osimhen (10) has scored more goals than Lookman (8) in the Italian top division.
