Official : Racing Genk sign versatile Nigerian midfielder for youth team
Published: January 31, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Racing Genk have announced the signing of versatile Nigerian midfielder Christian Akpan.
Akpan has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Limburg club with option for two additional seasons.
The 18-year-old will initially start his Racing Genk career with the club's youth team, which plays in the Belgian First Division B, equivalent of second tier.
He was extensively scouted by Genk talent spotters and was on the radar of several unnamed European clubs before agreeing terms with the current Pro League table toppers.
Akpan is a product of Académie MimoSifcom - Asec Mimosas' training center which produced the likes of Gervinho, Salomon Kalou, Didier Zokora and the Toure brothers.
Apart from midfield, he is also comfortable playing in defence and has shown his qualities in the training sessions he's had with his new employers in the last two weeks.
Nigeria international Paul Onuachu, former Flying Eagles winger Yira Sor and Spanish-Nigerian-Ghanaian central defender
Mujaid Sadick play for Genk's first team.
