Did Onuachu make a mistake joining Southampton?
Published: February 02, 2023
Super Eagles striker, Paul Onuachu on transfer deadline day joined English Premier League strugglers, Southampton.
In the current season, the striker had scored 17 goals in all competitions for his former Belgian side, Genk prior to his move to a new aboard.
Southampton are currently at the basement of the Premier League table and are fighting for their lives to escape relegation.
Meanwhile, Genk are doing amazingly well in the Belgian Pro League and are almost guaranteed of playing in an European club competition next season.
The attraction to the Premier League is understandable anyway.
Players want to play in arguably the most competitive and glamorous league in the world.
They are also keen to earn good money as the Premier League clubs - in comparison to most leagues - pay their players good wages.
However, there is more to football and Onuachu might regret his career decision.
The striker who has not sufficiently proven to the Nigerians supporters than he is able to translate club form to the national team could have his international career dampened should he suffer relegation with the Saints.
The languid Nigerian has scored only three goals in 18 international matches for the Super Eagles.
There could emerge other forwards who are playing consistently now and could be in the frame as Victor Osmihen's deputy in attack for the remainder of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Only time will tell if Onuachu who was described as good person off the field by his coach in Belgian made the right call.
At the moment, the fortunes of Southampton are in dire need of redemption.
Onuachu may - or may not - be the man to do it for the Saints.
