Official : 2015 U20 AFCON-winning midfielder joins FC Zurich
Published: February 16, 2023
With a statement on their official website, 13-time Swiss champions FC Zurich have announced the signing of former Nigeria underage international Ifeanyi Mathew.
The 2015 U20 AFCON-winning midfielder with the Flying Eagles has moved to FC Zurich with immediate effect, thus ending his association with Lillestrom in Norway, where he spent seven years.
Mathew has put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at FC Zurich until the end of the 2024-2025 season.
The 26-year-old registered 20 goals and 18 assists in 196 official matches for Lillestrom and was a Norwegian Cup winner with the Canaries in 2017.
He was farmed out on loan to Turkish Osmanlıspor, now known as Ankaraspor, in the second half of the 2018-2019 season.
Commenting on the capture of Mathew, FCZ head of sport Marinko Jurendic said : "Ifeanyi has particularly impressed us with his consistently strong performances at Lillestrøm SK.
"His strengths are not only positional play, but also playing against the ball. In all previous positions he has shown that he is a valuable team player who is willing to take on responsibility.
"With these skills he should also further stabilize our team."
A member of the Flying Eagles squad to the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup, Mathew has been allocated the number 12 shirt at FC Zurich.
