Super Eagles center-back conundrum : Who fits into Jose Peseiro's plans for AFCONQ
Published: March 15, 2023
It will be interesting to see the Super Eagles list for the double header 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau on March 24 and March 27.
This is particularly as the central defensive options are limited due to the injuries to captain William Troost-Ekong and his central defensive partner, Leon Balogun.
Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro would likely go for the duo of Calvin Bassey (with Zaidu Sanusi expected to play at left back) and Kevin Akpoguma.
Other central defenders pushing for places in the team are Olisa Ndah, and perhaps Kenneth Omeruo, who recently recovered from injury.
Bright Onyemachi is another new kid on the block that was a non-playing substitute in the international friendly against Portugal on 17th November 2022 and could be considered for a place in the starting lineup.
VersatileHNK Hajduk Split centre back, Chidozie Awaziem is also expected to be part of the team for this game and he is suited for the matches against a strong Guinea-Bissau side.
All Nigeria Soccer's verdict:
The duo of Calvin Bassey and Chidozie Awaziem would be the best central defensive partnership from the aforementioned options.
However, it will be interesting to note that the Nigeria Premier Football League could provide at least a defensive player capable of being part of these matches.
