Pundit admits PSV showed lack of ambition by selling 'crown jewel' Madueke to Chelsea
Published: April 03, 2023Dutch football expert Valentijn Driessen has pointed out that PSV Eindhoven showed lack of ambition by sanctioning the sales of two of their key players Noni Madueke and Cody Gakpo to Premier League clubs in the January transfer window.
Halfway into the season, Madueke and Gakpo moved to Chelsea and Liverpool respectively for a combined fee of approximately 80 million euros.
PSV Eindhoven's dreams of winning the Eredvisie title for the first time since 2018 are all but over as they trail leaders Feyenoord by eight points with seven games left to be played.
Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is the head coach of PSV, stressed that the current performance of the Eindhoeven club is the maximum achievable and criticized his employers for the departures of Madueke and Gakpo in January, which weakened the side.
PSV registered an impressive 4-2 road win over NEC Nijmegen on Saturday evening amid tension at the club after Van Nistelrooy's comments which have not gone down well with the PSV higher-ups.
"A club with great ambitions and championship aspirations like PSV does not sell its crown jewels (Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke) in the winter," Driessen wrote in his column in De Telegraaf, via psvfans.nl.
"But the repercussions of those transfers could not be discovered against NEC, while PSV with Gakpo and Madueke under contract fell through the lower limit against Rangers FC, FC Twente, SC Cambuur and FC Groningen."
England U21 international of Nigerian descent, Madueke registered 20 goals and 14 assists in 80 games as a PSV player before moving to Stamford Bridge.
