Lookman most prolific rookie in the Serie A, outscores Napol dazzler Kvaratskhelia
Published: April 04, 2023
Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman bagged his 13th league goal for Atalanta as the Bergamo outfit beat Cremonese 3-1 on Saturday, thereby equaling a long-standing record in the history of Atalanta.
Lookman, who had not scored in his previous seven games, started the game on the bench and came on at the start of the second half for Luis Muriel.
It looked as if Lookman was going to make it 8 games without a goal until the 93rd minute when he stabbed the ball in the net from Ederson Santos' pass.
After his latest goal, Lookman entered Atalanta's history books as the first player to score at least 13 goals at this stage of the season in his debut campaign since Poul Rasmussen in 1952-1953, according to OPTA.
He also eclipsed Napoli forward, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia as the rookie with the most league goals so far.
He is also the leading goalscorer for Gian Piero Gasperini's men in all competitions, with 15 goals in 29 appearances.
In Atalanta, the Super Eagles might have found a permanent and blissful home.
Lookman joined Atalanta last summer after stops at Charlton Athletic, Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester City.
