Arsenal loanee's Nigerian dad involved in unpleasant showdown with Wigan Athletic boss
Published: May 01, 2023
Miguel Azeez's Nigerian father confronted Wigan manager, Shaun Maloney after the 1-1 draw with Reading on Saturday over his son's lack of game time.
According to Daily Record, Maloney was challenged by Azeez's father and his elder brother, Femi, a footballer at Reading, over the Arsenal loanee's limited playing opportunities.
The pair took their frustrations out on the former Celtic star and Scotland international midfielder.
Azeez has struggled for game time since joining Wigan in January. He has only made two appearances for the Latics and has not made the matchday squad since January 21, 2023.
The central midfielder had initially been on loan at Spanish second tier side UD Ibiza but also saw playing time hard to come by, making only 11 appearances, before he was recalled in the winter transfer market.
Speaking before Wigan's game on Saturday, Miguel's father said :"Miguel hasn't really had an easy time there [Wigan]. He started with Kolo Toure and the new manager came in and hasn't really trusted him, which has been disappointing."
Azeez joined Arsenal at the age of five and was handed his first professional contract in 2019. He made his first team debut in December 2020 in Arsenal's 4-2 win over Irish side, Dundalk in the Europa League
At this stage, it remains to be seen if Azeez has a future at Arsenal having failed to impress in three different loan spells.
