'Thorn in the Chelsea defence' - Leeds legend reveals what impressed him about Awoniyi
Published: May 14, 2023
Leeds United legend Jermaine Beckford has revealed what impressed him the most about Taiwo Awoniyi in Nottingham Forest's 2-2 draw with Chelsea in a Premier League game at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Steve Cooper's side started the game fifth from bottom in the standings but they are now three points clear in the relegation zone after picking a point against the Blues, thanks to the heroics of Awoniyi.
The Nigeria international scored two headed goals to cancel out Raheem Sterling's quick-fire brace in the second half.
Awoniyi has hit form at the right moment for Nottingham Forest, scoring braces in back-to-back matches for the first time since his move to the two-time European champions.
The 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup winner has won a lot of fans over on the back of his impressive displays in recent games, and Beckford, who represented Everton in the Premier League during his playing days, is the latest to praise the Nottingham Forest striker.
"He (Awoniyi) was fantastic as well, he was such a thorn in the Chelsea defence all afternoon, causing all sorts of problems with his size, with his aerial ability, and he managed to get himself on the score sheet as well," Beckford said on Premier League Productions.
"It's exactly what you want if you are a team down at the bottom chasing points."
Awoniyi and his Forest teammates face Arsenal at the City Ground next weekend and are back in the capital for an away match against Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.
