Published: May 16, 2023
Nigeria rallied back to earn a 3-3 draw with Colombia in their final preparatory game ahead of their FIFA U20 World Cup opener against Dominican Republic.
Although the friendly was played behind closed doors at the October 20 Stadium, Tristán Suárez, the game was played at a good pace with the Flying Eagles players dominating their opponents with their physicality.
After the Colombians opened the scoring through an own goal from Trelleborgs FF defender Abel Ogwuche, Jude Sunday brought the game back to parity with a brilliant effort.
Colombia regained the lead thanks to Óscar Cortés who netted from the penalty spot and Watford midfielder Yáser Asprilla scored to give the South Americans a 3-1 lead.
In a valiant display by the Flying Eagles, they refused to give up and were rewarded for their efforts as Ibrahim Beji Muhammad reduced the deficit before Emmanuel Umeh tied the game.
Nigeria will open group play at the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup against the Dominican Republic at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas, Mendoza on May 21, followed by matches against Italy (May 24) and Brazil.(May 27).
The Nigeria Football Federation arranged the friendly against the Tricolors to prepare the Flying Eagles for a potentially troublesome match at the World Cup against five-time world champions Brazil.
