Peseiro's future : Former Super Eagles stars task NFF to make decision over Mourinho's ally
Published: May 19, 2023
Former Super Eagles players Ifeanyi Udeze and Edema Fuludu have charged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to make a firm decision on the contract of current Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro ahead of the end of his contract next month.
The Portuguese tactician is owed some salaries by his employers but feelers from the Federation hint of a possible termination of the contract of the former Venezuela coach.
Peseiro was recommended to the NFF by former Chelsea, Manchester United and current AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.
Speaking on Brila FM, Lagos on the contract situation of the coach whose team lost and won the fixtures against Guinea-Bissau in the last rounds of qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, former Eagles left-back Ifeanyi Udeze advocated for a consideration of a new set of coaches for the national team.
"We have passed this level. You (in reference to the Nigeria Football Federation) should know whether you have the funds to pay a new coach. This is because we actually need a world class coach for the Super Eagles.
"If not, you look inwards. If they have the money to pay a good coach, you get a foreign coach with clout and experience," Udeze who had 35 caps for the Super Eagles between 2000 and 2005 said on Brila FM.
Also weighing on the same subject, onetime Warri Wolves midfielder Edema Fuludu
"The NFF must take a new decision. They should get a new coach based on whether they have the funds. Otherwise they have to inform sports ministry. I want them to also look inwards.
"When his (Peseiro) contract expires, they will have to consider the local coaches," Fuludu said in support of giving the Nigerian coaches another shot at handling the national team.
There are unconfirmed reports in some sections of the media (not All Nigeria Soccer) that there are growing calls for the appointment of either embattled Salisu Yusuf or Ladan Bosso, the current coach of the Flying Eagles.
