Awoniyi's goal against Arsenal confirms Forest's PL safety and Man City as champions
Published: May 20, 2023Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was on target on Saturday evening in Nottingham Forest's 1-0 win over second-placed Arsenal at the City Ground which confirmed their Premier League status for next season and Manchester City as the champions.
The goal was Awoniyi's fifth in three games after his double last weekend in the 2-2 away draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The former Nigeria youth international has thus scored nine goals overall in the Premier League this season.
Arsenal had more possession of the ball however it was Forest that got the opener in the 19th minute.
Awoniyi received a pass that seemed overshot from Morgan Gibbs-White but Gabriel Magalhães's attempted clearance saw the ball rebound off the shin of the Nigerian and the ball beat Aaron Ramsdale in goal for Arsenal.
The Nigerian was yellow-carded in the 25th minute for an elbow on an opponent, his second booking of the campaign.
Two minutes into the second half, Felipe came close to doubling the goals for the home side but his shot was deflected off Gabriel before Ramsdale parried away for a corner kick.
Awoniyi was substituted in the 79th minute of the game by winger Brennan Johnson.
Forest with 37 points after the deserved victory over the floundering Gunners, cannot be overhauled by the other teams in the relegation battle.
