Chukwuemeka makes his first appearance under Lampard's management in 1-0 loss to Man City
Published: May 21, 2023
Carney Chukwuemeka made his first Chelsea appearance under Frank Lampard on Sunday evening in the Blues' 1-0 defeat against Premier League champions Manchester City.
Chukwuemeka found himself used sparingly from the bench under previous manager Graham Potter but had to bide his time under Lampard who is on interim basis at the club.
Despite the confirmation of their champions status on Saturday when second-placed Arsenal lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest, City played with intensity.
Chelsea's Wesley Fofana's defensive sloppiness in the 12th minute was punished when City broke with a team goal of high quality as Julian Alvarez finished calmly by placing the ball in the bottom left corner.
Chelsea threatened a couple of times to get back to the game particularly through former City boy, Sterling.
Sterling was replaced by Nigeria-eligible forward Noni Madueke in the 69th minute.
Carney Chukwuemeka then came off the substitute bench in place of the injured Ruben Loftus-Cheek with nine minutes left on the clock.
The Anglo-Nigerian player was named in the England U20 World Cup squad but has been blocked from participating at least in the group stages of the tournament in Argentina.
Chelsea's defeat on Sunday means that they are finishing the 2022/2023 in the bottom half of the table regardless of the outcome of their upcoming games against Manchester United and Newcastle United.
