'It is about the set-up' - Eguavoen urges Flying Eagles to adhere to game plan against Italy
Published: May 23, 2023
Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Augustine Eguavoen has revealed that the manner in which the Flying Eagles set up in their FIFA U20 World Cup clash against Italy, and the level of concentration and adherence to game-plan, would matter a lot on Wednesday.
Unheralded a bit before the start of the tournament in Argentina, the Italians made everyone sit up and take notice by beating Brazil 3-2 in their World Cup opener on Sunday, with Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei scoring a brace and providing an assist.
The Italians set up a structure that was magnificent, and with a near-full house at the Estadio Malvinas Argentina roaring them on with vintage support, they swarmed all over the Brazilians and did a perfect job of scoring three goals in the space of twenty five minutes in the first half.
Carmine Nunziata's boys are topping Group D after the opening round of matches by virtue of having scored more goals than the Flying Eagles.
"The Italians are a good side but nothing is given in football until a match is played and ends," Eguavoen told thenff.com.
"It is about the set-up, about the structure of your team and how much you bring to bear what you have noticed about the other team.
"I'm happy our coaches saw the Italians play the Brazilians and it is now left for us all to put our heads together and devise a winning plan."
Nigeria and Italy tango at the Estadio Malvinas Argentina as from 3pm local time (7pm Nigeria time) on Wednesday.
