England make move to cap-tie Eze as 2017 Super Eagles invitee gets first Three Lions call-up
Published: May 24, 2023
The English Football Association have made a move to beat the Nigerian Federation to the services of Eberechi Eze by handing the Crystal Palace attacking midfielder his first senior call-up to England's national team.
Nigeria initially made the move to cap Eze by inviting him to train with the Super Eagles in March 2017 ahead of a friendly with Burkina Faso in London but could not bag him as the match was later canceled.
And since then, the 2013 AFCON winners have been trying to convince the former Arsenal schoolboy to switch his allegiance from England to Nigeria without success.
Eze has been named alongside 24 others by Gareth Southgate for England's upcoming UEFA Euro qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
If he's given minutes even for one second in any of the matches next month, then he would become cap-tied to his country of birth, England.
Eze's inclusion in the latest England squad comes as no surprise as he has been in exceptional form for Crystal Palace in recent weeks.
He has scored 6 goals and recorded 1 assist in the last 8 games and has fourteen goal involvements in all competitions this season for the Eagles.
Eze and other members of the team are expected to report to St.George's Park on the 12th of June for training except for players that will be participating in UEFA European finals who will report at a later date.
England are currently topping their group after victories against Italy and Ukraine in March.
