Flying Eagles face Argentina team coached by ex-Liverpool star in WC round of 16

The Flying Eagles' next opponent at the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup is now known following the conclusion of matches in Group A, B and D.

Nigeria will be facing Argentina in a round of 16 clash at the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario, San Juan on May 31, with kickoff scheduled for 2200 hours.

Los Cebollitas are the most successful nation in FIFA U20 World Cup history, winning six titles in 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007, and the team has produced great players such as Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Juan Román Riquelme.

The Argentina U20 squad is coached by ex-Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, who represented the South Americans in the 2003 edition of the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Nigeria qualified for the knockout rounds by virtue of finishing third in Group D, having started with a win against Dominican Republic, followed by an impressive victory against the Italians, before a 2-0 loss to Brazil on Saturday evening.

The Flying Eagles finished on the same number of points as Brazil and Italy but ended up third due to a lesser goal difference.

If Ladan Bosso's team beat Argentina on Wednesday, their opponent in the quarterfinal would be either Ecuador or the team that finished second in Group F,  with the game scheduled to hold at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades, Santiago del Estero on June 4.
